Oral Hygiene With Mouth Piercings

When it comes to mouth piercings, rather it be lip, tongue or lip body mods, keeping top notch hygiene is a must; probably even more so compared to having nothing around the mouth area. Remember to brush your teeth twice a day and clean around the piercings multiple times a day. Have a good routine on products to use that work for you personally.

Have a strong line of products

  1. I use two types of toothpaste in order to keep a clean mouth and healthy gums.

  2. You want to use a toothpaste that help with either sensitive teeth, or regular toothpaste to keep your teeth healthy as well as white.

  3. Then you want to use a toothpaste that helps with gum health. So I put both of those on each end of the toothbrush bristles and then I brush for two minutes. It‘s also a good idea to have multiple types of rinses.

  4. Depending on your health, you can either choose alcohol free mouthwash, or mouthwash with alcohol in it. I use crest mouthwash with alcohol in it because I’m a smoker and I have celiac disease, which causes yeast to grow on my tongue more than a normal person.

  5. I also use a saline wash of water and salt that I’ve chilled in the refrigerator.

  6. Sometimes I even use some chilled chamomile tea to help if I have some agitation inside or outside of my mouth.

  7. I also use some unscented lotion around the cracks on the outside of my lips.

  8. You can also use lip scrubs to scrub around the lip piercings and if you have chapped lips.

  9. After that I’ll use some carmex lip balm. (It is a GOD TIER product.)

  10. For keeping your teeth white I recommend a charcoal powder product, but only use it ONCE in a while because overusing it will strip your teeth of enamel. No one wants this, especially while having mouth piercings. (Metal posts make it more likely that you have weak enamel on your teeth.)

  11. Remember to FLOSS for about 5-15 minutes as well

  12. Lastly, you’ll need a tongue scraper. Use it after brushing your teeth and then rinse your mouth out

Skin types that affect piercings

  • Depending on your skin type you’ll also need a type of toner to use around your mouth area. (Like how much you sweat, or if you have oily or combination skin.) Say your skin is dry, you’d need a moisturizing toner like something that contains witch hazel.

Clean, clean, clean

  • The BIGGEST key to healthy mouth piercings is to clean them REGULARLY. That means taking the time to take out the posts or rings and cleaning them thoroughly, such as with saline wash a hydrogen peroxide. (On the post, NOT on the posts while they’re in your mouth.) You also need to clean everything while you’re in a shower. I use a silicone face brush with multiple facial products to wash around my piercings and body mods, as well as the rest of my face. Multiple purpose products are just as good as something used for one specific thing. 👍🏻

Other useful tips to keep in mind

  • Another thing that I’ve found to be useful if when you’re brushing your teeth you take the time to take the toothbrush with toothpaste on it and gently run it over your mouth piercings, so that when you finish brushing and go to rinse your mouth out you splash some water on the piercings and it cleans the posts and the area around it a little bit.

  • If your gums are agitated or bleeding, take a glass of water and add some tea tree essential oil. Swish it around your mouth for a few minutes and spit. It helps calm down the agitation

  • Oil pulling: To help prevent cavities you just take some hard pressed coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth for 10-15 minutes. Spit and then wash the oil out with some water and salt

Eating

  • Although repetitive, it’s best to wash your mouth out with some water and salt after you eat. Unfortunately, food can get stuck in your mouth piercings that could cause swelling and pain.

  • Put some toner on a cotton pad and gently run it around your mouth piercings to wipe away some of the food that’s stuck on the outside of the posts

Types of posts

  • Always select shorter posts for your lip piercings so that they don’t scratch agains your teeth too much

  • Choose smaller rings so that they don’t scratch against your teeth or agitate your lips or the pierced area

  • Depending on how your mouth reacts keep an eye out for the back of the posts molding to the inside of your lips. I’ve had this issue once or twice and had to have a post cut out of my mouth. Sometimes you need posts with a bigger back.

  • Sometimes you need longer posts if one of your piercings is agitated or swollen.

  • Just remember to gauge what type of post that you need based on how your mouth is reacting 👏🏻
